TECHNICAL GUIDE

What is a Heat Meter, How Does it Work, Key Selection Criteria
BASIC PRINCIPLE

How Does a Heat Meter Work?

Heat meters continuously measure flow rate and the temperature difference between supply and return pipes. The energy consumed is calculated by the formula: Q = k × flow × (Tinlet - Treturn).
TEMPERATURE SENSORS

Supply & Return Temperature

Highly accurate sensors (such as Pt1000) detect the temperature difference (ΔT) between the inlet and outlet. Precise temperature measurement is the foundation of energy calculation.
FLOW MEASUREMENT

Ultrasonic, No Moving Parts

In ultrasonic meters, flow is measured by the delay of ultrasonic signals — without any moving parts. This ensures a long service life and minimal maintenance costs.
ENERGY CALCULATION & LOGGING

Smart Calculation & Memory

The meter automatically calculates energy consumption using real-time flow and ΔT data. Cumulative consumption, historical values, and error logs are safely stored and can be accessed any time.
KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

What to Consider When Choosing a Heat Meter?

  • Measurement accuracy (MID Class 2 or better)
  • Temperature sensor type (Pt1000, EN 60751)
  • Flow measurement technology (ultrasonic recommended)
  • IP protection class (IP67 or higher)
  • Communication: M-Bus, Modbus, OMS, wireless
  • Battery life & maintenance requirements
  • Data logging capacity (at least 24 months)

Check out the topics below.

What is a heat meter (calorimeter) and what does it do?

Heat meters are devices used to measure the amount of thermal energy consumed by each apartment or unit in central heating systems. They calculate energy use based on water flow and the temperature difference between supply and return lines — enabling fair and consumption-based billing.

Where are heat meters (calorimeters) used?

They are used in central heating, district heating/cooling, industrial applications, and energy efficiency projects — wherever there is a need to track individual energy usage.

What's the difference between a heat meter and a heat cost allocator?

Heat meters measure the actual thermal energy directly, while heat cost allocators estimate usage based on the temperature of the radiator. Meter-based measurement is more accurate and fair compared to allocators.

What are the advantages of ultrasonic heat meters?

With no moving parts, they do not wear out and offer a very long service life. Their contactless measurement technology ensures high accuracy with minimal maintenance and a very low risk of malfunction.

Is calibration or periodic inspection required for heat meters?

Yes. In most countries, including Turkey, periodic inspection is required every 5 years. Only authorized metrology companies can perform these inspections.

What is the battery life of heat meters? What should I do if the battery runs out?

The typical battery life is 10 years or more. If the battery is depleted, it should only be replaced by an authorized service provider. DAFSonic meters display a low battery warning.

What communication options do heat meters offer?

Options include M-Bus (wired), RS485/Modbus, and wireless (OMS or proprietary RF). This allows remote reading, centralized management, and easy integration into automation systems.

What should be considered during installation?

The meter must be installed in the correct flow direction, sensors in the right positions, and all connections should be sealed. Sufficient straight pipe before and after the meter is recommended, and air should be purged from the system.

What data is recorded and reported by heat meters?

Real-time flow, total volume, supply/return temperatures, ΔT (temperature difference), total operating hours, and energy consumption are all recorded. Past consumption and error logs can also be reported.

Why might a heat meter measure incorrectly or fail?

Incorrect installation (e.g., reversed sensors, air in the system), limescale in water, excessive vibration, depleted battery, or electronic faults may cause errors. Always seek authorized service if you suspect an issue.

Why Did DAF Develop Its Own Ultrasonic Heat Meter?

With over a decade of experience in Turkey and neighboring countries, we have been at the very heart of the heating metering industry. Having worked with tens of thousands of buildings and countless meters and systems, we've experienced every brand and technology in real-world conditions.

Our Observation: There is still a clear market need for a truly durable, maintenance-free, highly accurate, and securely communicative — yet affordable — product. While users demand economic and sustainable investments, technical teams want easy servicing and low failure rates. We learned all these needs directly from real users in the field.

Since our establishment as DAF, we have always supplied European — particularly German — origin products. We never compromised on quality standards. We stood behind every product and provided our customers with reliable, long-lasting solutions.

Our new generation product, dafSonic, was developed with the same philosophy, prioritizing reliability, durability, and user satisfaction in every stage from design to production.

dafSonic brings together all this experience and know-how. Our aim is to raise the bar for reliability and sustainability in metering, making life easier and safer for users and service teams alike.

  • Latest metering technology: Ultrasonic measurement, contactless and wear-free structure for long life.
  • Durability: IP67 protection for use in any environment.
  • Data communication: Supports all major protocols like M-Bus, RS485, OMS, and wireless.
  • User-friendly design: Easy installation, low maintenance, and clear data access.
Throughout the R&D process, real user feedback, field data, and technical experience guided our way.
Our goal: to make reliable metering, economic sustainability, and technological innovation accessible to everyone.
DAFSonic was developed to meet these exact needs.
